Christopher Garnier in jail ahead of bail hearing

A man accused of killing an off-duty police officer is due back in court next week, as the Crown tries to get his bail revoked.

Christopher Calvin Garnier, 29, appeared briefly in Nova Scotia Supreme Court on Wednesday. He’s charged with three counts of breaching the conditions of his release.

Garnier is awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree murder in the 2015 death of Catherine Campbell.

Halifax Regional Police said they did compliance checks on Friday and Saturday, but Garnier did not answer any of the calls at his mother’s home in Millville, Cape Breton, or his father’s home in Bedford.

On Sunday, Cape Breton Regional Police arrested Garnier in Millville and he was brought to Halifax. On Tuesday, he was at provincial court in Halifax to answer to three counts of breaching a recognizance. The case was moved to Supreme Court on Wednesday.

A show cause hearing has been scheduled for March 3, which will determine if Garnier’s bail will be revoked. He will remain behind bars at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth until then.

Crown attorney Christine Driscoll said they want the bail revoked because of safety concerns.

“For the safety of the public, we have to turn our attention to (the question of) ‘is our bail plan working and if it’s not, then what do we have to do about it?'” Driscoll told reporters.

Campbell’s remains were discovered on Sept. 16, 2015, in a wooded area on the Halifax side of the Macdonald Bridge.

Garnier’s trial in the Campbell case is scheduled to begin Nov. 20.
