Full-size IKEA store coming to Halifax
Lingonberries and Swedish furniture are officially hitting the east coast.
This morning, IKEA Canada announced its plan to open a full-size store in Dartmouth Crossing. This addition is part of the company’s coast-to-coast expansion plan announced last November.
Ground for the store will be broken in summer 2016. The store will operate as the most sustainable IKEA in Canada by focusing on energy efficiency and cutting waste.
It is expected to open 12 to 14 months after construction begins.
During this morning’s media announcement, Halifax Mayor Mike Savage commented that the IKEA store will likely become “a shopping destination for the entire city, the province and indeed for the Maritimes.”

He continued: “This is a very important statement for our community – maybe [IKEA shoppers from out of town will] take in the Mooseheads or the Hurricanes, visit Neptune and leave a few dollars behind in our unique shops and restaurants and watering holes.”
“This is a vote of confidence in the Halifax economy,” said Savage. “Good things are happening in Halifax.”
The Dartmouth IKEA location will be a full-size store, complete with:
- Showrooms
- A market-style floor
- A restaurant
- A children’s playroom
Home delivery, assembly, and design planning will be some of the services offered at the location.
