Halifax Regional Police say Ryan Michael Nehiley was the victim of Friday’s fatal shooting in Spryfield.

Police responded to a weapons call on Clovis Avenue just before 9 p.m. Friday. Nehiley, 25, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe he was shot inside his residence on Clovis Avenue.

Staff Sgt. Greg Robertson, a police spokesperson, said the investigation is still in the preliminary stages, but they do not believe it was a random act.

“It’s a cautionary thing we put out, so the public don’t believe there’s somebody out there, randomly, doing things like this,” said Robertson.

There have been no arrests and only a few details have been made public.

John Byrne lives near the crime scene on Clovis Avenue and said he didn’t hear anything unusual until police arrived. He said he’s glad his children are too young to know what happened. Still, he was concerned as he didn’t know if it was an isolated incident.

“Any time someone gets shot in your neighbourhood that’s disconcerting,” said Byrne.

Police vehicles, including a mobile command truck and a forensic identification van, were parked in front of the house on Clovis Avenue Saturday night. Police tape cordoned off the yard and evidence markers covered the front lawn as investigators in plastic coveralls entered the house.

This is the first homicide in Halifax since June and the 5th of 2018.
