Twenty pedestrians have been killed by vehicles on Halifax’s public roads since 2018. At least three more were killed on private roads. 

The Signal analyzed Halifax Regional Municipality’s traffic collision data, as well as expanded collision data provided by HRM, which included accident report information from Halifax Regional Police and the RCMP. The Signal also used news reports from The Halifax Examiner, The Chronicle Herald, CBC, and first-hand interviews to tell the story of these victims’ deaths. 

This compiled list of fatal collisions explains the circumstances of the victims’ deaths, including time, place, weather and driver conditions. Photos of the collision sites were taken in February and January 2026. Infrastructure may have changed from the date of the collisions. Obituaries and photos are included where available to honour the lives of the victims.

Unknown victim

(1956 – January 11, 2018)

The collision occurred Jan. 11, 2018, at 3:13 p.m. on St. Margaret’s Bay Road near Conrads Road intersection. It was daylight with unknown weather conditions.

The victim, who was 62, was killed by a reversing pickup truck on Conrads Road. The rural two-way road was under construction at the time of the collision. The victim was wearing dark clothing and was not visible to the driver.

Wray Hart

(October 12, 1955 – January 27, 2018)

The collision occurred Jan. 27, 2018, 2:56 a.m. near 1018 Queen St. in Halifax. It was dark with clear skies.

Wray Hart, 62, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the road at the top of a hill on Queen Street. The driver was young (23), impaired and driving aggressively, according to a police report. The driver skidded or spun while navigating a turn and hit Hart head-on.

Glenn Stright

(1958 – November 30, 2018)

The collision occurred Nov. 30, 2018, at 9:04 p.m. on Beaver Bank Highway 101 Exit 2 off-ramp in Lower Sackville. It was dark with clear skies.

Glenn Stright, 60, was killed in a collision while crossing the road at the off-ramp of Exit 2 of Highway 101. Two passenger cars were involved in the collision. Stright was wearing dark clothing and reportedly not visible to the drivers.

Thomas (Willard) Comeau

(1956 – December 14, 2018)

The collision occurred Dec. 14, 2018, 2:47 p.m. at the Gottingen Street and Prince William Street intersection in Halifax. It was daylight with clear skies.

Thomas (Willard) Comeau, 62, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Gottingen Street and Prince William Street. Police reports say the driver, 46, was driving a pickup truck aggressively and failed to yield the right of way while turning right at the stop sign.

Gary Rogers

(December 20, 1962 – February 22, 2019)

The collision occurred Feb. 22, 2019, at 5:49 a.m. near 350 Pleasant St. in Dartmouth. It was dark and snowing with wet roads.

Gary Rogers (56) was killed in a single-vehicle, hit-and-run while crossing Pleasant Street, not at an intersection or marked crosswalk. The accident report said the driver (27) was distracted and driving aggressively in a passenger car.

Alexandria (Sandy) Doucette

(May 1, 1956 – July 22, 2019)

The collision occurred July 22, 2019, 9:33 a.m. near 6417 Lady Hammond Rd. in Halifax. It was daylight with clear skies.

Alexandria (Sandy) Doucette, 63, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the intersection on Lady Hammond Road, where there is no marked crosswalk. The accident report said the driver, 53, was turning right at the intersection yield sign in an unloaded unit truck.

Joy Ruth Mendleson

(August 6, 1950 – July 28, 2019)

The collision occurred July 25, 2019, 12:55 p.m. at the Oxford Street and Oak Street intersection in Halifax. It was daylight with clear skies.

Joy Ruth Mendleson, 68, was hit in a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Oxford Street and Oak Street, where there is no marked crosswalk. The accident report said the driver, 31, was driving an unloaded SUV. Mendleson later died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision.

(1953 – October 11, 2019)

The collision occurred Oct. 11, 2019, 8:18 p.m. near 6705 Quinpool Rd. in Halifax. It was dusk and overcast.

The victim, 66, was killed in a single-vehicle, head-on collision when crossing Quinpool Road, not at a crosswalk or intersection. It is believed the victim was walking to or from school. The accident report says the driver was changing lanes in their SUV and skidded or spun on the road.

Dawn Nichols

(December 16, 1945 – February 18, 2020)

The collision occurred Feb. 18, 2020, at 1:22 p.m. at the intersection of Clayton Park Drive and Dunbrack Street in Halifax. It was daylight with clear skies.

Dawn Nichols, 74, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Dunbrack Street and Clayton Park Drive. The accident report says the driver, 83, disobeyed a traffic control device or officer, failed to yield the right of way, and was driving an SUV in a distracted, aggressive manner.

Kathleen Warren

(December 30, 1951 – April 7, 2020)

The collision occurred March 31, 2020, 10:12 a.m. at the Portland Street and Eisener Boulevard intersection in Dartmouth. It was daylight and overcast.

Kathleen Warren, 68, was hit in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Portland Street and Eisener Boulevard. The accident report says the driver, 65, was driving a passenger car aggressively and failed to yield the right of way while turning right at the intersection. Warren later died in the hospital due to the injuries sustained during the collision.

(April 29, 1945 – March 19, 2021)

The collision occurred March 16, 2021, 7:58 a.m. at the Young Street and Kempt Road intersection in Halifax. It was daylight with clear skies.

David Gass, 75, was hit in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Young Street and Kempt Street. The accident report says the driver was turning left at the traffic light, and a glare or reflection contributed to the collision. Gass, a family physician, later died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Suete Chan

(1994 – November 24, 2021)

The collision occurred Nov. 24, 2021, 8:12 a.m. near 300 Pleasant St. in Dartmouth. It was daylight with clear skies.

Suete Chan, 27, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at Pleasant Street. The accident report says the driver, 41, was driving aggressively and failed to yield the right of way at the traffic light.

Dereck (Rick) Day

(January 2, 1954 – November 27, 2021)

The collision occurred Nov. 26, 2021, 5:46 p.m. near 33 Sylvia Ave. in Halifax. It was dark and raining, with wet roads.

Dereck (Rick) Day, 67, was hit in a single-vehicle collision when crossing Sylvia Avenue, not at a marked crosswalk or intersection. Day later died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision. The accident report says the driver, 65,had limited visibility due to wet, rainy road conditions.

Edward (Ted) Creelman

(1955 – October 29, 2022)

The collision occurred Oct. 29, 2022, 6:25 p.m. at the Halifax Transit Bridge Terminal on Nantucket Avenue in Dartmouth. It was dusk with clear skies.

Edward (Ted) Creelman, 66, was killed in a collision with a Halifax Transit bus at the Halifax Transit Bridge Terminal, which is classed by the city as private property, on Nantucket Avenue in Dartmouth. Creelman fell onto the road as the bus was approaching the curb.

(1960 – November 8, 2022)

The collision occurred Nov. 8, 2022, 8:11 p.m. near 575 Main St. in Dartmouth. It was dusk with strong winds.

The accident report says the victim, 62, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing Main Street improperly. There were strong winds, but road conditions were normal.

(1953 – June 24, 2023)

The collision occurred June 24, 2023, at 11:19 p.m. on Main Street in Dartmouth. It was dark with fog.

The accident report says the victim, 70, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing Main Street improperly. Visibility was limited by fog, mist, or smog.

(1963 – November 2, 2023)

The collision occurred Nov. 2, 2023, at 5:36 a.m. near 65 Farmers Dairy Ln. It was dark with clear skies.

The 60-year-old victim was killed in a single-vehicle collision with a delivery truck when crossing Farmers Dairy Lane, a private road, and not at a marked intersection or crosswalk. There was excess sand, gravel or dirt on the rural road. The accident report says the pedestrian was distracted or inattentive at the time of the collision.

Satinder Kaur

(2000 – October 31, 2024) 

The collision occurred Oct. 31, 2024, 6:45 a.m. at the Spring Garden Road and South Park Street intersection in Halifax. It was dark and raining, with wet roads.

Satinder Kaur (24) was killed in a collision with a Halifax Transit bus at a marked crosswalk when darting into the roadway at the Spring Garden Road and South Part Street intersection. Kaur was attempting to catch up to the bus when the collision took place. The driver was turning right at an operational traffic signal with limited visibility and wet road conditions.

Edward (Ned) Murphy

(October 17, 1952 – January 6, 2025) 

The collision occurred Jan. 6, 2025, 7:05 a.m. at the Victoria Road and Chappell Street intersection in Halifax. It was dark with overcast clouds.

Edward (Ned) Murphy, 72, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Victoria Road and Chappell Street in Dartmouth. The accident report says the driver, 30, was driving aggressively and disobeyed a traffic signal at the intersection. Murphy later died at the hospital due to injuries sustained from the collision.

Alexandria Wortman

(February 12, 2003 – January 27, 2025) 

The collision occurred Jan. 27, 2025, 5:46 p.m. at the Jubilee Road and Vernon Street intersection in Halifax. It was dark with clear skies.

Alexandria Wortman, 21, was killed in a multiple-vehicle hit-and-run while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Jubilee Road and Vernon Street. The police report said the driver (32) was driving distracted, aggressively and impaired, first hitting another vehicle and then Wortman at the intersection.

Liam Coady, Wortman’s boyfriend of two years

“She was amazing. I think that’s the first word I’ll use for her,” Liam Coady told The Signal. Coady was Wortman’s boyfriend of two years. They broke up two months before the collision. “She was an incredibly passionate person, incredibly empathetic, incredibly kind, incredibly warm,” said Coady.

Debi-Lee Power

(October 16, 1984 – March 1, 2025) 

The collision occurred Feb. 28, 2025, at 7:01 p.m. on Gottingen Street near Bloomingfield Street in Halifax. It was clear skies with icy road conditions.

Debi-Lee Power, 40, was hit by a Halifax Transit bus after slipping on ice while crossing Gottingen Street, where there was no marked crosswalk. The street lights were off, visibility was clear, but the road was icy. Power later died in the hospital from injuries sustained during the collision.

Daniel Comeau

(January 22, 1967 – March 6, 2025)

The collision occurred March 6, 2025, 7:14 p.m. near 1613 Sackville Rd. in Middle Sackville. It was dark and raining, with wet roads.

Daniel Comeau, 58, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the road where there was no marked crosswalk. The 25-year-old driver had limited visibility due to rain and wet road conditions.

Maverick Brown

(April 4, 2022 – June 20, 2025) 

The collision occurred June 20, 2025, 7:47 p.m. near 91 Brownstone Way in Bedford. It was daylight with clear skies.

Three-year-old Maverick Brown, was killed in a single-vehicle collision after darting into the road on Brownstone Way, a private road, to catch a ball.
