Twenty pedestrians have been killed by vehicles on Halifax’s public roads since 2018. At least three more were killed on private roads. 

The Signal analyzed Halifax Regional Municipality’s traffic collision data, as well as expanded collision data provided by HRM, which included accident report information from Halifax Regional Police and the RCMP. The Signal also used news reports from The Halifax Examiner, The Chronicle Herald, CBC, and first-hand interviews to tell the story of these victims’ deaths. 

This compiled list of fatal collisions explains the circumstances of the victims’ deaths, including time, place, weather and driver conditions. Photos of the collision sites were taken in February and January 2026. Infrastructure may have changed from the date of the collisions. Obituaries and photos are included where available to honour the lives of the victims.


Unknown victim

(1956 – January 11, 2018)

The collision occurred Jan. 11, 2018, at 3:13 p.m. on St. Margaret’s Bay Road near Conrads Road intersection. It was daylight with unknown weather conditions.

The victim, who was 62, was killed by a reversing pickup truck on Conrads Road. The rural two-way road was under construction at the time of the collision. The victim was wearing dark clothing and was not visible to the driver.

The collision occurred Jan. 27, 2018, 2:56 a.m. near 1018 Queen St. in Halifax. It was dark with clear skies.

Wray Hart, 62, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the road at the top of a hill on Queen Street. The driver was young (23), impaired and driving aggressively, according to a police report. The driver skidded or spun while navigating a turn and hit Hart head-on.

(1958 – November 30, 2018)

The collision occurred Nov. 30, 2018, at 9:04 p.m. on Beaver Bank Highway 101 Exit 2 off-ramp in Lower Sackville. It was dark with clear skies.

Glenn Stright, 60, was killed in a collision while crossing the road at the off-ramp of Exit 2 of Highway 101. Two passenger cars were involved in the collision. Stright was wearing dark clothing and reportedly not visible to the drivers.

Thomas (Willard) Comeau, 62, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Gottingen Street and Prince William Street. Police reports say the driver, 46, was driving a pickup truck aggressively and failed to yield the right of way while turning right at the stop sign.

(December 20, 1962 – February 22, 2019)

The collision occurred Feb. 22, 2019, at 5:49 a.m. near 350 Pleasant St. in Dartmouth. It was dark and snowing with wet roads.

Alexandria (Sandy) Doucette, 63, was killed in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the intersection on Lady Hammond Road, where there is no marked crosswalk. The accident report said the driver, 53, was turning right at the intersection yield sign in an unloaded unit truck.

(August 6, 1950 – July 28, 2019)

The collision occurred July 25, 2019, 12:55 p.m. at the Oxford Street and Oak Street intersection in Halifax. It was daylight with clear skies.

Joy Ruth Mendleson, 68, was hit in a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Oxford Street and Oak Street, where there is no marked crosswalk. The accident report said the driver, 31, was driving an unloaded SUV. Mendleson later died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision.

The collision occurred Oct. 11, 2019, 8:18 p.m. near 6705 Quinpool Rd. in Halifax. It was dusk and overcast.

The victim, 66, was killed in a single-vehicle, head-on collision when crossing Quinpool Road, not at a crosswalk or intersection. It is believed the victim was walking to or from school. The accident report says the driver was changing lanes in their SUV and skidded or spun on the road.

The accident report says the driver, 83, disobeyed a traffic control device or officer, failed to yield the right of way, and was driving an SUV in a distracted, aggressive manner.

The collision occurred March 31, 2020, 10:12 a.m. at the Portland Street and Eisener Boulevard intersection in Dartmouth. It was daylight and overcast.

The accident report says the driver, 65, was driving a passenger car aggressively and failed to yield the right of way while turning right at the intersection. Warren later died in the hospital due to the injuries sustained during the collision.

David Gass, 75, was hit in a single-vehicle collision while crossing the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Young Street and Kempt Street. The accident report says the driver was turning left at the traffic light, and a glare or reflection contributed to the collision. Gass, a family physician, later died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Edward (Ted) Creelman, 66, was killed in a collision with a Halifax Transit bus at the Halifax Transit Bridge Terminal, which is classed by the city as private property, on Nantucket Avenue in Dartmouth. Creelman fell onto the road as the bus was approaching the curb.


Unknown victim

(1960 – November 8, 2022)

The collision occurred Nov. 8, 2022, 8:11 p.m. near 575 Main St. in Dartmouth. It was dusk with strong winds.

The collision occurred June 24, 2023, at 11:19 p.m. on Main Street in Dartmouth. It was dark with fog.

There was excess sand, gravel or dirt on the rural road. The accident report says the pedestrian was distracted or inattentive at the time of the collision.

The collision occurred Oct. 31, 2024, 6:45 a.m. at the Spring Garden Road and South Park Street intersection in Halifax. It was dark and raining, with wet roads.

The police report said the driver (32) was driving distracted, aggressively and impaired, first hitting another vehicle and then Wortman at the intersection.

Liam Coady, Wortman’s boyfriend of two years

“She was amazing. I think that’s the first word I’ll use for her,” Liam Coady told The Signal. Coady was Wortman’s boyfriend of two years. They broke up two months before the collision. “She was an incredibly passionate person, incredibly empathetic, incredibly kind, incredibly warm,” said Coady.
