On Feb. 3, Harbour East – Marine Drive Community Council approved a plan to build 3,000 housing units in Dartmouth’s Shannon Park.
This approval comes after almost a decade of planning, with the hope of seeing the empty former military housing site finally re-developed.
Owner of 34 hectares of the land, the Canada Lands Company (CLC) said it will partner with Millbrook First Nation, which was given 3.98 hectares from Indigenous Services Canada — the result of a longstanding land claim Millbrook had on adjacent Turtle Grove.
Millbrook First Nation announced in 2021 it plans to establish a reserve on its parcel.
According to an HRM staff report, the new development will include 23 city blocks, about three hectares of public parkland, and a transit hub, among other additions.
