Suspicious package prompts road closure in Dartmouth

Police investigated a suspicious package that was found at 13 Akerley Blvd. in Dartmouth on Monday.

Halifax Regional Police received a call about the package shortly after 10:15 a.m. from a nearby business. As police investigated, the westbound lanes of Akerley Boulevard, between Morris and Mosher drives, were blocked off.

Const. John MacLeod, spokesperson for HRP, said investigators used a counter-explosive charge to neutralize the device and move it to another place to know what it is.

“It’s still early in the investigation to be able to know the details of what the specifics were in nature of the device itself,” he said.

Streets reopened to cars and pedestrians around 1 p.m.

This is the second time in four days police have dealt with a suspicious package, but MacLeod said there is no evidence to suggest they are connected.

The first incident occurred in Halifax on West Street, between Robie and Agricola streets, last Thursday. The package turned out to be a bag of clothing.

MacLeod said a suspicious package is anything deemed to be out of place. If anyone finds such an item, he said not to go near it and call the police.
