Sports bars and pubs across Halifax are gearing up for one of the busiest nights of the year and stocking up on nachos, beer and wings for Super Bowl Sunday.

“We are expecting a lot of people and we are going to have a lot of fun,” said Oasis Pub and Eatery manager Fred Tanner.

He said the game usually attracts crowds who want to make the most of their viewing experience.

The Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Kansas City Chiefs at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Rihanna is performing at halftime.

Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time — that’s 7:30 p.m. for fans on the East Coast.

The Pint Public House is also expecting a full house.

Manager Jenna Vienneau said although inflation has increased the price of food and drinks, bar-goers are still coming out in normal numbers.

“We have actually been doing better than expected,” said Vienneau, adding they’re still navigating COVID “and surprisingly, people have been getting back to normal and going out.”

Vienneau said the annual event adds a “needed boost” to sales during the less busy winter months.

Downtown Halifax Business Commission CEO Paul MacKinnon said despite inflation, bars and restaurants downtown have been seeing “positive trends” and are “so far, so good.”

“The food industry is often the first to be hit hard whenever anything happens like this, but economically we are in a strange situation right now,” he said. “We are in a recession of sorts, but we are also dealing with staff shortages. Weekends like the Super Bowl certainly help.”
